The Burnet High School track and field programs continue to increase their distances and drop times while competing at the Viking Relays hosted by Lago Vista Feb. 26.
The meet featured Class 6A members Cedar Park and Leander Rouse, Class 4A member Fredericksburg and District 24-4A members Jarrell and Marble Falls.
“We needed to see this level of competition,” Burnet boys head coach Jordan Heusinkveld said. “Some of our guys seeing that they can compete against 6A schools and getting to run against athletes we will see in a few weeks at our district meet is always a good idea. It will only benefit us down the road.”
Lady Dawgs head coach Crystal Shipley agreed.
“It was great to compete against great teams,” she said. “I love when we can be pushed so early in the season.”
Senior Wrigley Mulhollan earned double silver in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, clocking 16.65 seconds and 49.23 seconds, respectively.
“She’s a talented athlete that works hard every day,” Shipley said.
Freshman Landry Schubert had the highest finish among District 24-4A members in the triple jump with mark of 34 feet and 8 inches to finish fifth.
“Landry isn’t scared of competition,” Shipley said. “She continues to work hard every day to get back to where she ended her eighth grade season, which was 36 and a half feet. She will get there.”
The 800-meter relay team of sophomore Cheyenne Adams, juniors Cali Eason and Brianne Smith and freshman Alaina Brown dropped four seconds to clock 1:48.37, good enough for fourth overall.
“Super proud of how they competed,” Shipley said.
Sophomore Clark Yanez took bronze in the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes and 25.42 seconds and was fourth in the 1,600 meters in 4:49.77.
“Clark is an incredibly tough and hard working runner,” Heusinkveld said. “He is extremely well liked by the rest of the team. He shows up everyday, works hard, and it showed on the track.”
The 800-meter relay team of seniors Clay Lamb and Matthew Williams, sophomore Caden Farmer and junior Lyndon Harycki took silver in 1:30.75.
“Those four kids have really embraced what we do,” Heusinkveld said. “They work hard, and are a joy to be around. We have some things to clean up on the exchanges, but these guys will be breaking the 1:30 barrier very soon.”
Williams also competed in the long jump where he finished fourth with a leap of 20 feet and 5 inches.
“Matthew is incredibly resilient,” Heusinkveld said. “I believe it was October when he hurt his knee against Lampasas playing football. He has worked tirelessly to come back and compete on the track. I’m so incredibly proud of him and the work he has put in.”
The boys junior varsity team had a chance at winning this division “and came up just short against Cedar Park, which is more than double our enrollment,” Heusinkveld said.
“It’s a testament to the culture our team has created as well as the work ethic of our kids,” he said.
Shipley noted that what made her most proud were what she heard from other coaches.
“Multiple schools commented on how respectful our athletes were and how they cleaned up after themselves in the stands,” she said. “And if you know track meets, you know that’s a big deal. Character matters. Representing our program and school with integrity matters. And our kids continue to do that the right way.”
Burnet will compete at the Taylor meet Thursday, March 5.
